Go-Paddle: An Introduction to Playboating.
What is Playboating?
Paddlers have always played on rivers and Playboating is the evolution of this desire to master their fluid environment. Now a very popular paddlesport discipline, it really developed in the early 1990's as plastic kayak technology evolved and playboating competitions started.

There is no strict definition for this discipline, it basically involves paddlers getting together at a local river or playspot and playing the river. From basic moves such as surfing waves and holes, a whole repetoire of skills and techniques have developed that require a high degree of skill, an affinity with the river and an urge to push the boundaries. Playboating is an excellent way of developing confidence and whitewater technique and most extreme whitwater kayakers developed their skills by playing the river.

How Do I Get Involved?
Playboating, as its name suggests, is the least regulated paddlesport discipline within the UK. Most playboating occurs informally, on river trips, at artificial whitewater courses and at local weirs and playspots. Competitions, or rodeos are held on a regular basis across the country, usually at an artificial course where water levels can be guaranteed. Such events are usually organised by retailers or manufacturers and whilst competitive in nature, are often just an excuse for a big paddlers get-together and a party. A good starting point is your local canoe club who will be able to advise where the nearest playspot is and put you in touch with like minded paddlers.
